Access to clean drinking water is critical for the outdoorsman, the world traveler, and the emergency preparedness conscious. Personal water purification systems are available that can treat water from lakes, rivers, and streams.  They can also be used to treat tap water in foreign countries that often still contains waterborne pathogens.  Water purification equipment is truly a vital part of any emergency preparedness kit to be used for emergency situations and for natural disasters such as earthquakes, floods, and hurricanes when water may be easily contaminated.

Some of our favorite portable water treatment systems available for purchase and use are the following:

The AquaStar Plus! Ultraviolet (UV-C) Portable Water Treatment System is an ultraviolet water treatment device designed for use in all climates and settings. It is ideal for campers, emergency crews, hikers and families who are assembling emergency preparedness or survival kits. A water bottle holding 300 ml to 1 liter of water is filled with water to be cleaned.  A cap with the UV-C light attached to it is used to seal the bottle.  When a button on the cap is pushed, the ultraviolet light is engaged and will glow. You then agitate or swirl the bottle during the cleaning cycle to assure even disinfection. The AquaStar Plus! can treat a liter of water in 80 seconds.  Operating on a pair or CR123 batteries, the AquaStar can clean up to 16 gallons or 60 liters of water per set of batteries. UV-C light is very effective way of killing pathogens such as viruses, bacteria, Giardia and Cryptosporidium.

MSR MIOX Purifier, developed in conjunction with the U.S. Military, works by creating a brine from salt and untreated fresh water.  A small electrical charge then passes through the brine solution and creates a powerful does of mixed oxidants. The converted mixed oxidant solution is then poured into the untreated water inactivating viruses, bacteria, Giardia, and Cryptosporidium.  The MIOX is extremely light and compact, operates on 3v CR-123A Lithium batteries, and can treat large amounts of water. One set of batteries can treat up to 200 liters of water.  It is ideal for outdoor recreation adventures, travel to other countries where water sanitation is a problem, and for disaster preparedness.

The MiniWorks EX Microfilter is a durable water filtration system capable of pumping and cleaning up to one liter of water per minute.  Water is filtered through a ceramic element that removes bacteria, protozoa such as Giardia and Cryptosporidium, and particulate mater.  A carbon core also helps to eliminate unpleasant odors and can remove the taste of chlorine, iodine and many chemicals and pestisides.

The Katadyn Exstream XR Water Bottle Purifier is an EPA registered purification bottle capable or removing viruses, bacteria and protozoa.  To use, simply fill the bottle with water and squeeze.  As you squeeze, the water passes through a carbon filter to eliminate odors, remove debris and improve taste. A pleated cyst filter removes Giardia and Cryptosporidium, and the patented ViruStat purification cartridge continues purify the water removing bacteria, cysts, protozoa, viruses and other contaminates.  Each filter cartridge can treat up to 26 gallons or 100 liters of water.

We challenge you to add a portable water purifier filter to your emergency preparedness kit, hiking and camping gear, or travel bag so you can have pure, safe drinking water anywhere you go.

If you do not yet have access to a water purifier system, always remember that you can sterilize water by heating it to a boil and then maintaining a vigorous, rolling boil for 5 minutes.
